The best accommodation on the Biscay coast

Opposite the Mundaka estuary, a paradise for surfers and adventurous swimmers, nestles a house with a gallery and garden built at the beginning of the century by architect Marcelino Arrupe, the father of Pedro Arrupe, the 28th general of the Society of Jesus.

Transformed into a family hotel and decorated in an immaculately English style, the hotel today offers the very best accommodation on the Biscay coast.

On arrival, you are always met by Mari Carmen Alonso or her husband, José Ignacio Alkorta. Both of them are a perfect example of Basque openness and hospitality. The hall is at the back of the house and scented with the aroma of freshly-baked bread and jam.

The charming bedrooms are full of thoughtful details. Through the windows you can make out the dark silhouette of the church and the Cantabrian Sea where it meets the mouth of the river. A setting for those who know how to appreciate the rhythm of silence and the scent of home.

On warm summer evenings the owners are kind enough to serve an outstanding marmitako for all their guests beneath the vine-covered arbour. The salty air adds the finishing touch.
